LETTER FROM JOSEPHITE JUSTICE NETWORK
TO ATTORNEY-GENERAL
On 9 August a letter was sent to the Attorney-General, the Hon Mark Dreyfus. It outlines the weakness of the case against Mr Duggan and ends thus:
This matter goes to the heart of Australian democratic rights and the responsibilities of those with political power.
We believe that political influence is affecting this situation. We believe the continual compliance of Australia with US desires and the challenges to both the US and Australia posed by China are immense forces that are dictating the victimisation of Daniel Duggan. The case against him is weak, depends on a series of unfortunate circumstances, and is peppered with unproven assertions, lack of evidence, errors of fact and the questionable involvement of ASIO.
The Josephite Justice Network is deeply concerned at the possibility that he could be incarcerated for decades on such flimsy grounds, and so we ask you to refuse to hand Daniel Duggan over to the United States.
Yours sincerely, Sisters Susan Connelly, Jan Barnett and Josephine Mitchell

THREE DAYS’ PRAYER FOR DANIEL DUGGAN
On 2 August The Sisters of St Joseph and all Josephites were asked to pray this prayer over three days beginning on Tuesday 13 August:
O God, we pray for Daniel Duggan, his wife and six children, and all those connected to
decisions that may send him to jail in the United States for decades.
We pray that the judgements made will be based on humanity, mercy, the full truth
and the common good. Amen.

ASKING PRAYERFUL SUPPORT
On 29 May all the Australian Catholic Dioceses and some parishes were contacted with this message:
Daniel Duggan has been an Australian citizen since 26 January 2012. He is the husband of Saffrine and the father of 6 children. The United States accuses him of conspiracy, money laundering, and training Chinese pilots. He denies all charges and has broken no Australian law.
People from other nations worked with Mr Duggan in the same South African aviation business. The US has named them as conspirators, but not one of them has been arrested. Dan has been in solitary confinement for over 18 months. If extradited to the US, he could face 60 years in prison. The Attorney-General, Mark Dreyfus has the power to send Dan to the US soon. He also has the power to drop the case completely.
This email is to ask you if your Church community could pray for Daniel Duggan in the Prayers of the Faithful. Perhaps something like this:
We pray for Daniel Duggan, his wife and six children, and all those connected to decisions that may send him to jail in the United States for decades. We pray that the judgements made will be based on humanity, mercy, the full truth and the common good. Lord, hear us.
